Sarasota not only sits along the Gulf of Mexico, but also includes seven barrier islands. The result is a panoramic landscape of several distinct beaches, bay estuaries, bridges, and countless canals, bayous and smaller waterways that pervade many neighborhoods. Each island (also referred to as a Key) offers its own lifestyle and identity.
Sarasota’s legacy is deeply tied to the circus magnate, John Ringling. Ringling made Sarasota his winter home and did much to transform its development. With him, he also brought his wealthy peers from the mid-western United States, who in turn created a legacy of philanthropy. The result is that today Sarasota has a vibrant culture of the arts, with its own opera, ballet, and the Van Wezel, one of the most prolific and profitable performing arts centers in the country.
Siesta Key Beach, on one of Sarasota’s barrier islands, is ranked as the #1 beach in the U.S., and Sarasota itself is known as one of the top retirement destinations in America. Add to that the abundant flora and fauna of Sarasota’s waterways, Myakka state park, good schools, and low crime, and you have a great lifestyle destination.
If you were to aggregate all of the public land available for walking, biking, and trekking, Sarasota County it would be the 23rd largest national park in the United States. With its beautiful sunsets, white sandy beaches, and vibrant arts community, Sarasota has experienced an upsurge in international holidaymakers and investors.
Sarasota Property Market Summary
Our team of Sarasota Realtors has over 50 years of combined experience in this area. Of course, we’re biased, as Lee grew up along this beautiful waterfront and we have chosen to raise our kids here. But putting on our Duke MBA hats, we also know firsthand what a great investment Sarasota can be—especially in the high end and luxury waterfront markets, where properties generally outperform the middle and lower ends of the market. More than that, we believe Sarasota offers an exceptional lifestyle choice, and is growing in popularity each day, for exactly that reason.
Since the pendulum swung back in mid 2013 creating a sellers’ market, Sarasota is settling in to a more balanced market where the buyers and sellers are now on more equal footing. There is healthy competition in the market for the best properties. Prices are rising, and the right property bought now will likely continue to appreciate.
What Can I Buy in Sarasota?
As has held true in recent years, at the higher end of the market there are some great opportunities to be had, as the most competition is for properties between $100,000 and $750,000, where 80 percent of the market lies.
